Metro Denver EDC's 2011 Year in Review

The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation (Metro Denver EDC) focuses on six strategic initiatives—mobility, tax reform, new and existing business, national marketing, Denver International Airport/international flights, and special opportunities—in order to create jobs and investment in our region. Below is a summary of major accomplishments in those areas for 2011:


Ball completes testing for James Webb Space Telescope mirror segments

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has announced that the final six mirror segments for the James Webb Space Telescope have completed cryogenic temperature testing at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. The final testing verifies that the 18-mirror composite primary mirror segments meet their combined wavefront error and radius of curvature requirements.


8th Annual Colorado Space Roundup connects industry leaders

On Dec. 7, 2011, approximately 350 members of the Colorado aerospace community gathered for the eighth annual Colorado Space Roundup at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Presented by the Colorado Space Business Roundtable (CSBR) and the Colorado Space Coalition (CSC), the Colorado Space Roundup is the premier statewide event connecting all sectors of aerospace in Colorado-business, government, military, and education-to focus on statewide issues and updates within the industry.


Gov. Hickenlooper announces CO to seek spaceport status

Private sector interest and potential for new aerospace jobs driving efforts to develop key aerospace asset in state


Ball Aerospace delivers Orion Phased Array Antenna EDUs

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has delivered two Phased Array Antenna (PAA) Engineering Development Units (EDUs) for the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle to prime contractor Lockheed Martin. The PAA serves as a primary data and voice communication link for NASA astronauts across all mission phases from launch through flight operations and final capsule recovery. The EDUs are now undergoing testing at Lockheed Martin-Denver in preparation for subsystem Critical Design Review.


Applications sought for 2012 Colorado Business Awards

Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Colorado Business Awards, to be held in April 2012. The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, along with presenting sponsor Colorado Business Bank, will honor the Small Business of the Year, the Emerging Business of the Year, the Minority-owned Business of the Year - including women-owned businesses - the large and small Nonprofit Organization of the Year and the Green Business of the Year.


ULA celebrates five years of mission success

The United Launch Alliance was formed just five years ago, bringing together the world's two most experienced launch teams and two highly reliable launch systems, Atlas and Delta. ULA's unparalleled recipe of experience is built on the Atlas and Delta legacy of 1,300 launches during the past five decades, propelled by ULA employees and suppliers located in 46 states.


CSU students compete to bring their ideas to market

Colorado State University business students will present their ideas for new business ventures to a panel of business leaders, inventors and experts in entrepreneurship at the annual Venture Adventure Colorado competition. The event will take place from 2-7 p.m. Dec. 5 and 2-4 p.m. Dec. 7 at CSU's College of Business Rockwell Hall-West.


U.S. Air Force picks Lockheed Martin for RBS Flight Demonstrator program

Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] has been selected by the U.S. Air Force for a contract award to support the Reusable Booster System (RBS) Flight and Ground Experiments program. The value of the first task order is $2 million, with a contract ordering value of up to $250 million over the five-year indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract period. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center are developing the RBS as the next generation launch vehicle that will significantly improve the affordability, operability, and responsiveness of future spacelift capabilities over current expendable launchers.


CU-Boulder: Early earth may have been prone to deep freezes

Two University of Colorado Boulder researchers who have adapted a three-dimensional, general circulation model of Earth's climate to a time some 2.8 billion years ago when the sun was significantly fainter than present think the planet may have been more prone to catastrophic glaciation than previously believed.
