CU-Boulder news briefing Feb. 4 to highlight role in space weather mission

The University of Colorado at Boulder will hold a news briefing Thursday, Feb. 4, on the Feb. 9 launch of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory to help scientists better understand the violent effects of the sun on near-Earth space weather that can affect satellites, power grids, ground communications systems, astronauts and aircraft crews.

The orbiting observatory will carry three experiments, including a $32 million CU-Boulder instrument known as the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment. The Solar Dynamics Observatory is NASA’s first mission as part of its new “Living With a Star” program.

The briefing will be held at 10 a.m. at the LASP Space Technology Building at 1234 Innovation Drive in the  CU Research Park.  To reach the facility from Denver take U.S. 36 west to the Foothills Parkway exit, turn north and take Foothills Parkway north to Colorado Avenue. Turn left and travel about .3 miles.  The space facility is on the north side of Colorado Avenue.
